Music is a central part of our life here at Great St Mary's. We hold a commitment to the highest standards we can achieve and also seek to include all who want to participate — we pride ourselves on our open and welcoming atmosphere.

Great music is at the heart of our worship at Great St Mary’s! Home to five choirs, an orchestra and recitals throughout the year. Our majestic and beautiful sanctuary also boasts two fine pipe organs, and a peal of twelve bells.

With five choirs and a long tradition of great choral music, Great St Mary’s takes pride in our choral offerings. Our Director of Music, Sam Hayes, is always keen to hear from singers interested in joining our community of music makers — to learn more, visit our choirs page. We sing three choral services every Sunday during school term time.

Our orchestra, the Academy of Great St Mary’s, performs concerts throughout the year. Players are drawn from across the city and University, and beyond. Click here to see our concert calendar!

We offer free lunchtime recitals and concerts throughout the year. Do visit our recitals page to see a complete schedule, or even  find out about giving your own recital.

Visiting Choirs

Our worship has been graced with performances from choirs from as far afield as Canada and Russia, as well as local choirs looking for somewhere new and exciting to sing. We are always keen to welcome singing groups from any tradition, and have enjoyed hearing gospel choirs and choirs from the Orthodox tradition leading worship from our choir stalls. For more information, download our Guidelines for Visiting Choirs and Guidelines for Visiting Organists.
