Friends of Great St Mary’s

The Friends of Great St Mary’s was formed to help its members keep in touch with the church, and what is happening there. The Friends of Great St Mary’s also supports the care of the fabric of the building, through subscription, covenant and legacy. It undertakes fundraising for specific tasks of renovation and improvement.

You are warmly invited to become a Friend of Great St Mary’s, and to help preserve this historic building.

Over the years it has been the support of The Friends of Great St Mary’s that has made possible repairs to the fabric of this Grade I listed building and the purchase of new items to reinforce our ministry.

The committee of The Friends works closely with the Parochial Church Council of the day to plan and implement specific projects worthy of support and to arrange social events for the benefit of its members. Our most recent undertaking was to support the conservation of the pew-end carvings of animals facing east many of which had become damaged.

The picture shows one of the many pew-end carvings prior to conservation.

Coming events

The AGM this year was held in the Michaelhouse Chancel on Thursday 24th May. Afterwards Gill Mallett gave us a fascinating talk on the hallmarking of silver with illustrations and artifacts containing hallmarks including the special diamond jubilee mark for 2012.

In early July Friends visited the Law Faculty on the Sidgwick Site. This building was designed by (Lord) Foster Associates. The building has an amazing curved sectional glass roof and wall (a forerunner to 30 St Mary Axe ‘the Gherkin’). There a talk and tour was given to us by the Librarian, David Wills.
Watch this site for new events which we hope will happen in the autumn.
