School visits

Explore our 800 year old church at the heart of Cambridge for an exciting opportunity to learn outside the classroom.

We aim to make your visit educational, inspirational, memorable and fun!

Great St Mary’s is the official centre of Cambridge and the perfect base for a school trip in the city.

We offer a large range of Education Sessions focusing on RE, History and Creative Arts.

You can book a self guided visit using our resources or a session led by our experienced Education Officer and trained teacher Becky Auty.

We can customise your visit to suit the learning needs of your group, whether you are looking for a quick tower climb, an interactive guided tour or would prefer a full day of education sessions.  We can help you to plan your day in Cambridge by arranging joint visits with King’s College Chapel or other museums.

We offer sessions for primary schools, secondary schools, language schools and other learning groups.

Booking a visit

Teachers can read our pre-visit information which gives details about how to book, facilities and accessibility and health and safety information.  Alternatively you can e-mail Becky Auty at to find out more.   Teachers are most welcome to visit the church in advance of their visit.

What do teachers say?

Great St Mary’s Revealed- Interactive Guided Tour

“The Great St Mary’s trip was fantastic- the best we have ever had!  Anna was brilliant and so interesting.  She pointed out all sorts of things within the church itself and, unbeknown to her, it linked superbly well to our History, even using the same paintings that we have been looking at in class!  The children were so thrilled to be able to recognise them and tell her all about Richard III, Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth I.”

Great St Mary’s ExploRE Morning

“Thank you so much for having us.  The kids had a really good day- they loved seeing all the different settings and your activities were brilliant.  They got so much out of it.  Next time, we will definitely do the tower!”

 Great St Mary’s ExploRE Morning

“Thank you for the lovely experience of viewing Cambridge from St Mary’s Church tower.  It was a truly unique opportunity to see Cambridge from a bird’s eye view and to enjoy the serene atmosphere of a beautiful centre of spirituality.  All of the pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Joint Visit to Great St Mary’s and King’s College with a Tudor Town Trail

Thank you so much for all you did to set things up for the trip. We had a terrific day.  There was a warm welcome at Great St Mary’s and the children were fascinated by the ten bridesmaids’ window and story.  King’s entry was very smooth and the Tudor trail which we did in the afternoon was a perfect balance of information, route planning and storytelling –the children were obviously really pleased to become experts on their home town.  We would really like to repeat the trip next year so will be in touch again!”
