The beautiful fourteenth-century Chancel is an atmospheric venue for services, concerts, presentations, exhibitions, and workshops. Wedding blessings, puppet shows, art exhibitions, fashion shows, storytelling and Shakespeare plays have all taken place here.
The original ‘miserichords’ (wooden seats around the edge) combine with our moveable pews and stacking chairs, to make a flexible space that can be adapted to suit lots of different events.
The Chancel can fit up to 100 people in presentation style (including performers), and up to 120 if standing. The space is 11.0m long and 5.0m wide (excl. altar area and fixed seating around edge). We also have a concert piano and PA system which are both available to hire.
It can also be hired as an additional space for your party or wedding reception in conjunction with the café. In this context the chancel is particularly good as a space for drinks before the meal, or dancing afterwards.
During business hours this space is open for all to use (unless there is a service or event). The chancel has many original features which tell the story of St Michael’s Church, the oldest college chapel in Cambridge. The chancel also offers a break-out space for café diners who are visiting with young children.
