Art Exhibitions

The Café space has a light, airy, contemporary feel with three main walls at ground level and one at mezzanine level known as "the gallery". These can be hired out individually, or for maximum impact you can make the venue entirely your own.

How big is the exhibition space?

We have three exhibition walls in the café. The servery wall contains 5 large display panels and the south wall contains 9 small display panels. The upstairs gallery space comprises two large walls, each with 6 hooks attached to the ceiling, to hang pieces from. Do get in touch if you’d like to know the precise dimensions of the space.

We can also host exhibitions in the main chapel – please contact us to discuss this option further.

How long does an exhibition last for?

Art exhibitions usually run for a two week period, but we can offer three and four week slots at certain times. Exhibition changeovers happen on a Sunday as this is the only day when the café is closed to the public. Please contact us to discuss possible dates for your exhibition.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on the duration, but the standard price for a two-week exhibition is £300. You can see the full price list here.

When hiring the whole venue we offer complementary hire of the café for one weekday evening (Monday-Thursday, 6.30-8.30pm) for a 1-hour private view. This is an opportunity for artists to invite their families, fans, media partners and new potential buyers to come and look at their work. We invite a select group of the “Michaelhouse Friends” to these events.

What if I can’t afford it?

Why not consider linking up with one or two other artists and hire the space together, reducing your individual costs and increasing your audience? We can also offer a 30% discount for charitable organisations.

If you’d like to just hire one wall, please contact us and we can try to find some other artists to hire the remainder of the space. The date options may be more limited if you’re only hiring one wall.

Do you provide a hanging service?

No, we don’t offer a hanging service – artists need to hang their own work. We provide the space and a strong rail at the top of the display board, but you’d need to provide the picture hooks, wire and labels.

Do I have to be a professional artist?

Not at all. Michaelhouse welcomes submissions from professional and self-taught artists from all walks of life. Some of our artists have exhibited here for the first time, while others have exhibited professionally on an international scale. Some exhibitions are part of a final year in study from schools or colleges.

How will people know about my exhibition?

The Michaelhouse Centre displays posters outside the building on our railings and inside the foyer on our noticeboard. We also have a space in the foyer for artists to include more about their work and a price list.

Exhibitions are publicised in our monthly newsletter, which is circulated to our membership base, the Friends of Michaelhouse and published on this website. Printed copies are also on display and available in the foyer. If you would like to receive updates on our news and events please sign-up!

We also have a Facebook page which we use to promote exhibitions and events, and we encourage artists to help raise the profile of our social media activity by sharing the posts with their support base. We also publicise information about upcoming exhibitions via the Great St Mary’s website and Visit Cambridge.
