Heritage Project

Thanks to a 3-year grant of £295,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Great St Mary’s is launching an exciting Heritage Education Programme.

Great St Mary’s is an historic church at the heart of the city and university of Cambridge. This project aims to bring its exciting histories alive for a wider audience, and to open up the Church as a dynamic centre where visitors, school groups and Cambridge residents can discover new facets of our historic city.

You can get information about the successful Heritage Lottery bid here, and read some notes on Great St Mary’s history here.

Rosie Sharkey has been appointed as the part-time Heritage Education Officer, and building work is underway to provide a flexible education space within the church, incorporating interactive touchscreen displays and video viewing facilities.

Over the coming months, as building continues, we will be researching the history of the church and beginning to plan an ambitious education programme of exhibitions, art activities, and workshops for schools and local community groups.

You can follow us on twitter @GSM_Heritage or keep an eye on the blog for fun snippets of historical research, pictures and sneak peeks behind the scenes!

If you would like to get involved by volunteering to help with the development of the Heritage Education Centre, please get in touch with Rosie by emailing heritage@gsm.cam.ac.uk.
